Synopsis:

In Megan Goldin’s unforgettable debut, The Escape Room, four young Wall Street rising
stars discover the price of ambition when an escape room challenge turns into a lethal game of revenge.

Welcome to the escape room. Your goal is simple. Get out alive.

In the lucrative world of finance, Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam are at the top of their game. They’ve mastered the art of the deal and celebrate their success in style—but a life of extreme luxury always comes at a cost.

Invited to participate in an escape room as a team-building exercise, the ferociously competitive co-workers crowd into the elevator of a high rise building, eager to prove themselves. But when the lights go off and the doors stay shut, it quickly becomes clear that this is no ordinary competition: they’re caught in a dangerous game of survival.

Trapped in the dark, the colleagues must put aside their bitter rivalries and work together to solve cryptic clues to break free. But as the game begins to reveal the team’s darkest secrets, they realize there’s a price to be paid for the terrible deeds they committed in their ruthless climb up the corporate ladder. As tempers fray, and the clues turn deadly, they must solve one final chilling puzzle: which one of them will kill in order to survive?

My Thoughts:

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Megan Goldin’s debut novel, The Escape Room! I’m thrilled to be joining the tour; thank you St. Martin’s Press for the invitation to join!

The Escape Room by Megan Goldin is a wild-ride so if you’re looking for a thriller that you won’t be able to put down once you pick it up then you’ve found it (do yourself a favor-don’t start this at 11 pm like I did because you won’t get any sleep until you finish, promise!).

I’m going to admit something here: elevators make me feel claustrophobic and I freak a little bit every time I have to get on one, so the concept of being deliberately trapped in one for an escape room challenge completely skeeved me out. It’s a brilliant concept for a book though and it had that locked in vibe from classic mysteries that I love only completely revamped and modernized to fit with the ruthlessness of the characters and their fast-paced, high-stakes careers in Wall Street finance where greed fuels ambition and work always, always comes first as the stakes are too high otherwise.

Vincent, Sam, Jules, and Sylvie are best of the best at the elite investment firm they work at―or they used to be until recently when too many deals they’ve overseen have failed to close and other mistakes have cropped up leaving the four open to possibly being cut from their jobs.  At Stanhope, there is no room for mistakes. None. Not when every single employee is out for number one and the job is cutthroat, demanding, and vicious.

When the four are called by HR to an unplanned Friday afternoon meeting for what their boss tells them is a “team-building” exercise, they go, especially if it might save their jobs and careers. With the elevator set up as an escape room, they soon realize the clues are actually directing them down a really dark and sinister path. What happens when they answer these clues and solve the mystery? Will all of them escape the escape room?

The storyline alternates with narratives taking place in the present in the escape room and in the past leading up to present-day events. The characters are mostly unpleasant and think that their wealth, power, and success allow them the right to behave any way they want and ensure they be protected at all costs. Privilege at it’s finest! Goldin’s writing was superb-the pacing was sharp, the plotting sensational, and the characterization fantastic.

The Escape Room is wildly entertaining and you won’t be able to escape from its clutches once you start reading, I guarantee! Make sure you pick this one up this summer!

**Thank you, St. Martin’s Press for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.**

  1. Great review, Stephanie! The book was a real page-turner. I’m also a bit claustrophobic. Were you feeling sorry for one of the characters ( trying to keep it spoiler-free) gasping for air?

    1. It’s getting lots of buzz! I really enjoyed it. It’s pure entertainment, that’s for sure. Thanks, Jenn! Just busy, we start back to school on Monday and I’m not really prepared, lol. It’s funny because last year when we started I had lesson plans made through Christmas break and now I’ve got nothing written out just books purchased and a vague idea of winging it day by day, which I know won’t last because I have control issues but will work better for her because she tends to deviate and explore more of what we’re doing. We’ll see. Hope you’re well!❤
