Goodreads Synopsis:

What should have been a fun-filled, carefree day takes a tragic turn for the worse for one mother when her best friend’s child goes missing in this suspenseful, compulsively readable and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

It all started at the school fair…

Charlotte was supposed to be looking after the children, and she swears she was. She only took her eyes off of them for one second. But when her three kids are all safe and sound at the school fair, and Alice, her best friend Harriet’s daughter, is nowhere to be found, Charlotte panics. Frantically searching everywhere, Charlotte knows she must find the courage to tell Harriet that her beloved only child is missing. And admit that she has only herself to blame.

Harriet, devastated by this unthinkable, unbearable loss, can no longer bring herself to speak to Charlotte again, much less trust her. Now more isolated than ever and struggling to keep her marriage afloat, Harriet believes nothing and no one. But as the police bear down on both women trying to piece together the puzzle of what happened to this little girl, dark secrets begin to surface—and Harriet discovers that confiding in Charlotte again may be the only thing that will reunite her with her daughter…

My Thoughts:

Her One Mistake by Heidi Perks is a gripping, psychological thriller that had me quickly turning pages to discover the fate of little Alice after she disappeared the day of the school fair when she was in the care of Charlotte, her mom Harriet’s best friend.

A child suddenly gone missing without a trace is every parent’s worst nightmare. As a mother, my heart completely broke for Harriet because I know that I’d be completely inconsolable and terrified just like Harriet is if one of my kids suddenly disappeared and no one saw what happened. Honestly, how do you pick up the pieces of your life until you get your child back in your arms?

I also felt empathy for Charlotte after Alice goes missing.  This is the first time Harriet had allowed Alice out of her sight to be cared for by anyone else, yet she simply disappears the second Charlotte looks away, so the unimaginable guilt Charlotte has to live with tears her apart but even worse, the incident shatters and destroys her relationship with Harriet. After all, how do you tell your best friend that you lost her daughter after you’d promised, no, sworn, that nothing would go wrong while her daughter was in her care?

Perks has written a novel that is exactly paced, compelling, and the dual narratives told by Charlotte and Harriet give excellent perspectives of the storylines, which are told in alternating times of “Before” and “Now”. The writing style is unique and really adds to the story. You can feel the devastation, heartbreak, tension, unease, and suspense just drip off the pages.

Of course, there is so much more to the book than I can reveal without spoiling it for you, so I won’t! After all, I want you to read the book! But what does the title mean by “her one mistake” because it’s definitely a question with many different answers in this emotionally charged, pulse-pounding thriller! This is my first time reading a novel by Perks, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of her novels!

**Thank you, Gallery Books and Heidi Perks for an ARC copy of Her Own Mistake, which I won in a Goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.**

    1. It really is terrifying! And it’s the 2nd book about child abduction that I’ve read recently so scary, but they were both so good! It’s a fab read! Thank you, Jenn! Happy Friday to you too! ♥

    1. It really was, and it was my first Goodreads Giveaway, which is funny since I’ve been on Goodreads forever, lol. Thank you-I think you’d like it! I’m feeling better than I was, which is funny since I slept less last night than any other night and have a terrible toothache (from a tooth that was filled almost 2 weeks and keeps progressivley hurting worse, so I think he got too close to the nerve. But I’m trying to ignore it because I don’t want a root canal over break, haha). I think we will only we’ll probably go on Monday instead just to be sure; we’re just driving down to Charleston a few days and then Savannah a few days so nothing too exciting! Well, exciting for me because I love both cities and the food, but my daughter wanted to go to Disney. I just don’t want to deal with that right now since hubby and I are going to Italy for 2 weeks next month, so 2 big vacations is a lot of planning that I’m too lazy to do (and I hate Disney World..I’m so terrible). I hope you’re feeling better! Happy Friday to you! xoxo ♥

  1. I hope you’re feeling better today Stephanie – and all of your family as well! This is a marvelous review of what sounds like a very well written thriller. I will add it to my ever growing list. It’s a good thing that I pared it down at the end of the year just so I could build it back up again. 😉

    1. Thanks so much, Mackey! We’re all on the mend today, thank goodness! It really is good although terrifying to think of! Thank you! I need to go through my TBR and get rid of some as well since I keep adding to it. I think I’ll have to live forever to read all the books I want to read, haha. 🙂

    1. Thank you! It’s the first giveaway that I’ve won, and I was thrilled (at least it wasn’t a DNF, lol!) I saw that she and Lindsay had loved it when I posted my review before I went to bed last night, so I was glad! I have a feeling you will like it a lot–it’s got a twist that I didn’t quite expect.
